Minor Football League
17 June 2008

Kickhams Creggan 0-10
Cargin 1-08

There was a top of the table clash at Pairc í Ciceam on Tuesday evening when Cargin travelled the short distance to play table toppers Creggan in the minor football league. The way the league has been shaping up the winners of this match would be in pole position to win the league so it was all to play for.

As the old adage goes, it was a game of two halves such was the squaliness of the breeze that was blowing up towards Paddy’s Shop end of the field. Creggan had the advantage of it in the first half and looked to build up a good lead to take in to the break.

Cathal Small got the home side off to a quick start with a pointed free but Cargin soon got in to their stride and struck over two points to move in to the lead. Creggan regrouped and with the aid of the wind struck four points without reply, Cathal and Odhran getting two each. Cargin kept themselves within touching distance by popping over a free, but the last score of the half was converted by Conor McCann with a beauty to leave the men in G&G three points to the good.

Half Time Kickhams Creggan 0-06, Cargin 0-03

To try and counteract the wind in the second half a positional change was made with young Conor McCann switching from the forward line to a sweeping position in front of the full back line. Disaster struck early though as Cragin capitalized on a misjudged bounce and the ball was struck to the Creggan net to immediately cancel out Kickhams advantage.

Cargin, buoyed by this score, edged ahead when they converted three free kicks before Creggan registered their first point of the second half when Paddy McAuley launched a huge kick over the bar. The men from Toome though restored their 3 point advantage by slotting over another free mid way through the half.

The Creggan lads had not finished though and they regained control of the game at midfield for a spell which resulted in Cathal Small firing over a point and when Odhran McLarnon raised two more white flags the game was all square.

Time was quickly ticking away and it looked like the next score would win the match and unluckily it fell to the visitors as they converted a harshly awarded free by the ref, as he adjudged Aidan Maguire had over carried.

There was no time left to claw back this point as Laim Neeson blew the whistle for full time. Our lads were disappointed but there was little or no difference between the sides and the draw was probably the fairest result.
