ACFL Div. 5
12 October 2008

Aldergrove 2-03
Kickhams Creggan 1-12

If ever there was an incentive to win Division 5 and establish ourselves in Division 4 then Sundays match against Aldergrove is one of those games/venues that will make you dig in that extra bit harder for fear of having to go there again.

Kickhams recorded their 10th win out of 10 games in this league and the match was a typical encounter against Aldergrove, with those that have played here over the years knowing what I’m talking about.

There was never going to be any free flowing football played on a heavy, uneven pitch so the points had to be battled for and this is what Creggan did against a typically robust St. James’ side.
The visitors dominated proceedings from start to finish and engineered the first four scores of the game. Joey Robb set Creggan on their way and Ciaran McCartney (two) and Olly Duffin also getting early scores. Aldergrove managed to get down the field and they themselves popped over two points of their own to keep them in the match.

A few minutes later however Creggan extended their advantage when they conjured up a well worked goal that was finished to the net by Tommy McCann. Tommy then added to his score with another point, and the first half scoring was wrapped up with a Ciaran McCartney free kick and a fine point by half back Cathal Shannon.

Half Time – Aldergrove 0-02, Kickhams Creggan 1-07

Creggan started the second half in scoring fashion as they went about wrapping up the game early as Joey and Tommy split the posts to extend the lead. After this, the game started getting messy as dangerous challenges started to be made, accompanied by the usual slabberin’. Aldergrove had a wee purple patch as they notched two goals and a point in the space of 4 minutes, the second of which came from the penalty spot.

These scores brought the home side within 3 points of Kickhams but it all went pear shaped for them when they had 3 players red carded in quick succession. Our lads kept their heads and punished them with the ball as a game of pass, pass, pass, keep ball was played out among our defenders. This drew Aldergrove out and it enabled Creggan to finish off the game as they tacked on another 3 points. Tommy McCann, Cathal Shannon and Dominic Totten doing the honours.

Next up for the Division 5 team is an away trip to O’Donnells next Saturday. This will no doubt provide another stern test for Creggan as the Belfast side are also pushing for promotion. To compound matters, the match falls the day after the Gala Dinner so no doubt there will be a few weary heads and limbs travelling up the M2 to strip out.
