Kilmacud All-Ireland Seven-a-Sides
19 September 2009

Kickhams Creggan made their annual trip to Kilmacud, Dublin to play in their prestigious All-Ireland Sevens tournament on All-Ireland Football weekend.

Creggan were drawn alonside Justin & Joe McMahon's Omagh, Dublin side St. Anne's and Roscommon representatives St. Brigids.

Just off the bus and with no time to limber up, Creggan were caught cold in their first group game against Omagh who raced in to a healthy half time lead. Having shaken off their lethargy, the Kickhams side managed to knuckle down and play some better Seven's football in the second period but it was not enough as they went down 3-08 to 1-08. Dermot McCann getting the Creggan goal.

A better performance was required in the second game against St. Anne's, but again Creggan were defeated on a scoreline of 4-05 to 2-07 with Mark Dougan scoring a penalty and Odhran McLarnon grabbing the other goal.

The final group game was against Roscommon outfit St. Brigids who, if victorious would qualify to the knockout stages of the competition. This side had already taken the scalp of Omagh earlier so it was always going to be a tough match but Creggan saved their best performance of the day by winning on a scoreline of 4-06 to 3-04. The Creggan goals coming from a Mark Dougan penalty, a brace from Odhran McLarnon and an absolute thunder bolt that nearly dismantled the goalposts from player of the tournament, Leon Bonnes!

All in all it was a disapointing enough day on the footballing front as the lads felt they could have topped the group and gone further in the competition, but as always it was a good day out and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. There will surely be a fight for places in next year's team...

Out of interest, Clonduff from Down won the competition by defeating Longstone, also from Down by 11 points to 8 points in the final.
