Creggan Pick Up First League Points

Creggan playing at home picked up their first points in the Division 1 Football league when they proved much to strong for visiting St Brigids. It ended 1-14 to 0-6 with this possibly they easiest game they will get.

The Kickhams settled early and got on the scoreboard with  scores from Odhran McLarnon, Leigh Martin and Hugh McNulty. St Brigids found the going tough and indeed their only scoring threat came from the dead ball, after silly frees were conceded and Cormac O’Grady lapped up the chances.

At the start of the second quarter, Creggan started to win possession in the middle of the field, reducing the visitors scoring potential and setting up many chances for their lively forwards.

Their domination  was soon turned into scores and the break through came after twenty two minutes when corner forward Ruairi McCann scored the only goal of the match after a well worked move which originated deep in their own defence. This score helped them to a comfortable 1-8 to 0-3 interval position.

A strong start from St Brigids to the second half saw one of their replacements first off the mark but things soon again swung the way of Creggan. Three points were hastily tagged on, two from Leigh Martin and the other from Hugh McNulty as the game rolled to it’s inevitable conclusion.

St Brigids will be disappointed with the large number of wides kicked in the second half alone and feel that this game should have been a lot tighter. That said, the Creggan team also must be applauded for their work rate and great defensive play.

The final nail in the St Brigids coffin came at the start of the last quarter when Ronan McGrady of St Brigids received his second yellow card for persistent fouling.  With loads of space on Pairce Na Ciceam, two of the Creggan defenders were able to make their way onto the score sheet.  Odhran McCann and Sam Meguire picked off great points which any attacking player would have been pleased with. In the end the home side ran out easy eleven point winners.
