Thomas Devlin Motors Sponsored Ulster U21 Club Football Champions Tournament
Prelim Round
27th January 2013

Donagh(Fermanagh) 1-05
Ballinderry (Derry) 6-14

Ballinderry took the lead after only 10 seconds of this preliminary round tie and never looked in any danger after that. Brian Denvir Plumbing Man of the Match Ryan Bell opened the scoring with a long-range point and the Lough shore men utilised the wind at their backs to kill the game off in the first ten minutes. Finty Bell added a goal after five minutes, converting after an interception by Harry Wilkinson.

Daniel McKinless was also on target during this early barrage with 1-1 to add to further points from Ryan and Finty Bell. This left Ballinderry with a 2-4 to 0-0 lead before centre half back Ruairi McGlade pointed from a free for Donagh who squandered the few opportunities that the Ballinderry defence allowed them from play. The Shamrocks went on to dominate the rest of the half with further goals from Finty and Ryan Bell. Ballinderry’s long passing and score taking was the highlight of the half with Ryan Bell, Lee Martin and captain Matt Quinn all pointing from range.

The Shamrocks weren’t as dominant in the second half as Donagh came into the game with the wind at their backs. Ruairi Loughran gave a fine display adding to his first half point with another free from all of 50 metres. The Derry Champions never looked in trouble though and further padded their lead with goals from substitute Matt Graham who converted Barry Wilkinson’s cross and half back Darren Lawn who made a surging run and exchanged passes with the unselfish Gareth McKinless for a deserved goal.

St. Patricks’ other second half scores came from Kevin Curran, Danny Sugrue, Michael Montgomery and major through half-forward Brian McDermott. Ballinderry will expect a tougher challenge from Donegal Champions Naomh Conaill and All-Ireland winner Dermot Molloy when they are next out in the quarter final on Sunday 10th February.
